the Revelator, the author of Revelation, had been exiled to the island
of Patmos for preaching the Gospel of Christ under the Roman Emperor Domitian. There is some
disagreement among scholars about whether the author of Revelations is John the Apostle
or another figure referred to as John of Patmos, due to linguistic and
stylistic differences in the writing of Revelations versus the books

The end of verse seven is also translated as "all the tribes of the earth will wail because of Him." Presumably this means because so many people will realize that the teachings of the Gospels were accurate and will be terrified about what their fate is to become now that Christ has returned.
