"Around the throne are twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones are twenty-four elders, dressed in white robes, with golden crowns on their heads. 5 Coming from the throne are flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and in front of the throne burn seven flaming torches, which are the seven spirits of God; 6 and in front of the throne there is something like a sea of glass, like crystal."
When I started looking for more information about the twenty-four elders I ran into a lot of different interpretations and opinions about whom they may be. Catholicism refers to the elders as saints or priests, suggesting they were once human. The Eastern Orthodox church refers to them as "incorporeal", suggesting they are spiritual beings, and has a feast day for them: link. The Wikipedia entry about this passage refers to the elders as "head of a family, tribe, or nation". Other writers suggest they are spiritual beings as well, in line with the belief of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and not mortals, referencing a mistranslation of the pronouns in Revelation 5:8-10 in some Bible translations, which translate the Greek pronouns as first person plural rather than third person plural.
The verses go on to refer to seven flaming torches sitting in front of the throne which represent the seven spirits of God. The entry on this passage at gotquestions.org says this verse may refer back to the Seven spirits named in Isaiah 11:2, and other writers note that these seven spirits may refer to the seven graces of God referred to in Romans 12:6-8. The Wikipedia entry on this passage also goes on to say that some believe these seven spirits to be seven angels listed in Enoch 1, an apocryphal work.
Isaiah 11:2
"The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord."
Romans 12:6-8
6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully."
