Unlike the prior four opened seals this particular seal does not introduce any new otherworldly imagery or symbolism. This seal recognizes the martyrs of Christianity and depicts them as souls waiting for the justice of God to be visited on those by whom they were tormented.
This article at lifehopeandtruth.com talks about how the fifth seal corresponds to the time of the Great Tribulation wherein Satan knows that he is running out of time to 'make war with the saints' and turn people on earth away from God. The author refers to Daniel 12:1 in particular regarding the Tribulation where, "there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time...".
Some Christian authors think that the four horsemen are let loose at the end of the age in the period prior to Christ's return, while others profess a belief that the Horsemen were let loose long ago and have been running roughshod over the earth since the time after Christ's assumption into heaven; like many passages in Revelation it seems subject to interpretation and one could make an argument either way.
