Apparently stars in this writing signify Angels, so the star falling to earth may mean an angel coming to earth to receive the key. In Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers on biblehub.org the writer connects this verse with the Lucifer as the fallen angel that tried to overthrow God and was cast into hell.
Matthew Henry's commentary says that the stings of the locusts represent the pain of vices: "Out of this smoke there came a swarm of locusts, emblems of the devil's agents, who promote superstition, idolatry, error, and cruelty. The trees and the grass, the true believers, whether young or more advanced, should be untouched. But a secret poison and infection in the soul, should rob many others of purity, and afterwards of peace."
I haven't seen any comments on the significance of the five months, which is odd because just about all the numbers and time periods reference prior verses and prophecies of the Bible. I suppose for those who believe in post-tribulation rapture, if the tribulation is seven years maybe this could be five of the last six months of that period.I found the graph below online that lays out the order for the different belief systems.
