13 So when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.
Verse 13 seems to be telling us that since Lucifer has been cut off or separated from God and thrown out of heaven he now makes it his focus to pursue the church, which is what the woman in the text is said to symbolize, whether this be a reference to Jews or Christians or both.
In Joseph Benson's commentary on biblehub.com, Benson makes specific references to the evolution of the Christian church throughout the Roman Empire and likens the two wings given to the woman in verse 14 to Exodus 19:4 which says, "You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself."
Benson continues to explain the symbolism of the woman being given Eagle's wings by saying, "but the similitude is the more proper in this case, an eagle being the Roman ensign, and the two wings alluding probably to the division that was then made of the eastern and the western empire."
This writer at simplybible.com has an interesting take on the expression "time, times, and half a time", which most people interpret at three and a half periods of time, most commonly three and a half years; he references God compounding and then relieving the suffering of his children; it's an interesting point of view I've never heard before and worth pondering.
