The writer at bibleref.com explains Babylon the Great as being the representation of the worship of satanic principles such as lust and greed, and this article at Frontline gives a good synopsis of Revelation with a lot of historical background, and comes to the conclusion, like many scholars, that Babylon the Great/the Whore of Babylon signifies the Roman Empire.
The writer at gotquestions.org gives a great rundown on the interpretations over the centuries of the identity of Babylon the Great, from both preterist and futurist points of view. I don't get into too much personal prophecy here on this blog but recently I had a very striking dream about the 'whore of Babylon; in the dream I saw the personification of this being. Up until the point of having had this dream, I had never thought of the terminology 'whore of Babylon' as anything more than symbolic of either ancient Babylon or Rome. But when I awakened from this dream I was led to wonder if this terminology, 'whore of Babylon' refers to an actual demonic entity; it's possible that in ancient Babylon she was deity in their pantheon.
What disturbed me further was that in the dream a voice said, 'come, look' and I was led to see the 'kingdom' of the whore of Babylon from her point of view. As I looked I saw empty fields stretching for miles and miles, and they were fenced in. It seemed to allude to a line from a poem that I read years ago that talked about the sinfulness of how the rich fence in their fallow fields while people hunger for food that could be growing there. The dream seemed to suggest this female demonic deity ruled or rules over a territory which was empty of fruit, barren, in which no one could be fed.
