Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”
2 So the first angel went and poured his bowl on the earth, and a foul and painful sore came on those who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped its image.
3 The second angel poured his bowl into the sea, and it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing in the sea died.
4 The third angel poured his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say,
“You are just, O Holy One, who are and were,
for you have judged these things;
6 because they shed the blood of saints and prophets,
you have given them blood to drink.
It is what they deserve!”
7 And I heard the altar respond,
“Yes, O Lord God, the Almighty,
your judgments are true and just!”
8 The fourth angel poured his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with fire; 9 they were scorched by the fierce heat, but they cursed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues, and they did not repent and give him glory.
10 The fifth angel poured his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness; people gnawed their tongues in agony, 11 and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores, and they did not repent of their deeds.
In this chapter, the seven angels are pouring out the last seven plagues on the people of the earth. In verses nine and eleven it is made clear to the reader that God is doing these things so that people will repent of their sins and try to reform themselves and live their lives for God.
In Matthew 12:30 we are told that if we are not for Christ, we are against him, and that if we are not spending our lives trying to draw people to worship Christ, then we are literally scattering souls away from Christ and God. These plagues are trials that are given to challenge the people who had taken the mark of the beast to repent of their misdeeds and draw on God for the strength to get through the very difficult events that are occurring as each angel pours out another plague on the earth.
The last three verses almost sound like the description of a nuclear war followed by a nuclear winter, though it could also be the aftermath of a large volcanic eruption, as from the Yellowstone super-volcano. Other things that eclipse the sun for long periods of time are large dust storms and forest fires, which blot out the sun for days on end in specific geographic areas. It seems clear from Revelation chapter 14 that there is a separation of the saved souls of the earth from the followers of the beasts of the sea and of the land, and this particular set of seven plagues follows that event. I hope that everyone accepts Christ as their Savior now, while there is still time, so that none of us are subject to the horror of these seven plagues.
