22 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; 4 they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
6 And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true, for the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
7 “See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
This passage shares some very beautiful imagery; the river of the water of life flowing through the city with the tree of life on either side of it. Once again we are told, as in the prior verses, that there is no lamp or sun in this city because the light of God and Christ make bright sunshine all the time.
Also in this passage we are given a contrast to the prior verses wherein we are shown what happens to people who freely choose to worship the beast and the false prophet and take the name of the beast on their forehead or right hand, making their allegiance to the powers of darkness: they are cast into the Lake of Fire. In these verses we are told that those who choose to worship Christ and the true God have the name of the Lamb on their foreheads and get to live in this beautiful night-less heaven with God and Christ.
The chapter ends with the speaker, whom we presume to be Christ, saying, "See, I am coming soon" and telling us to remember to keep our attention on the prophecy shared here. I really hope that everyone will accept Christ and allow Him to walk alongside you and guide you into His ways. I believe that Christ has given us a long period of foreknowledge about His second coming because he understands that it takes a while for individual humans to change their habits and behaviors and begin to mirror those of Christ and God.
