Revelation 3: 14-18

“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

There are still many ruins left standing at Laodicea; this article talks about both the ruins and the "lukewarm" parishioners of Laodicea who were trying to avoid being killed by the emperor Domitian for not worshipping him as emperor, as well as the imperial cult dynasties.

This passage in chapter three verses fourteen through eighteen is probably my favorite in this chapter of Revelation. Jesus tells the parishioners that they are lukewarm, which is hindering them staying close to Christ and carrying His Gospel forward. If they were 'hot' in their faith and had a fervor to witness about Salvation, He would promise them rewards in heaven. If they were 'cold' He could convict them of sin and bring them back into closeness with Him. But since they have found comfort, and are 'lukewarm' in His words, they have insulated themselves from the comfort that He would like to give them.

It is amazing that humanity sees things so differently from Christ; that we could see ourselves as rich and comfortable and have what we think are all our needs met, but Christ sees us as "wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked". This passage reminds us that earthly wealth and goods not only can't save us but they cannot feed our souls. That is why when Christ is being tempted by Satan during his forty day fast in the desert he says that "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)

A Prayer for Salvation from Christ:

Lord Jesus, I confess my sins and ask for your forgiveness. Please come into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Take complete control of my life and help me to walk in Your footsteps daily by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me and for answering my prayer.
