Revelation 10:8-10

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll; and he said to me, “Take it, and eat; it will be bitter to your stomach, but sweet as honey in your mouth.” 10 So I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it; it was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.

The writer at enduringword.com explains that these verses mean that the eating of the scroll signified the Holy Spirit entering John. More specifically, receiving the Word of God was initially a very elated feeling for John, but then when the reality and impact of what he foresaw sunk in on him it became an overwhelming truth to carry.

It is no doubt a privilege to receive visions from God and feel communication from God and Christ, but when these visions foretell dark events it comes with a heavy burden. Here at the following link another author reminds us that Ezekiel was given a scroll to eat as well and also told to prophesy.

At biblehub.com, Ellicott's commentary characterizes it this way: "The love of Christ may constrain men, but the very ardour of their affections must bring them through tribulation, and may make them as outcasts, defamed, persecuted, slain. The flaming zeal to emancipate mankind from thraldoms, follies, and ruinous sins may stir the soul with a holy joy; but there come moments when men are almost tempted to turn back, and to think that they have undertaken a hopeless task, when they find how slow is their progress, and what new and unexpected difficulties arise." This is the bitterness to which the verses refer, when the joy at having received prophesy fades from the mind and the reality of the struggle ahead sets in.
