Revelation 11:1-2

"I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months."

I started reading the first paragraph of this chapter and decided to stop after the second sentence because there are so many specifics and so much detail in each sentence that I want to do it justice. First, John is given a measuring tool and told to go measure the temple. In this article at readingacts.com, the writer talks about the similarities between this chapter and the protagonist of the book of Ezekiel who, after eating a scroll just as John of Patmos was commanded to, is told to then measure the Temple as well.

I really like this article by Leah Adams that gives some succinct history about the temples the Hebrews worshiped in over time. The writer Adam Maarschalk gives more insight about these verses and puts forth the supposition that it is possibly the more extreme Jewish sects that the verses above refer to as having 'trampled the holy city' for 42 months. One of those groups are the Zealots, which is interesting in light of some theories floating around out there that Jesus may have been one; as written about in the book "Zealot" by Reza Aslan.
