11 But after the three and a half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.
These
verses pick up where the two messengers of God have been lying dead for
three and a half days after being killed by the beast from the
bottomless pit, whom we presume to be Satan.
At this point God breathes into them the breath of life, and they are resurrected and ascend into heaven, with people all over the world 'from every tribe', as the prior verses say, looking on. This is after people the world over had celebrated the death of the messengers of God who were proselytizing to all the peoples of the earth.
God calls them up into heaven in a cloud, just he did with Jesus. This is one of several times in the Bible, apart from the ascension of Christ, that we are shown prophets of God ascending the clouds. This time we are told the whole world will be watching, probably via the internet or smart phones.
The writer at studylight.org compares these messengers to earlier prophets in the Bible: "Two messengers of God symbolize the church’s powerful witness during this troubled period (3). This witness is likened to that of Zerubbabel and Joshua, who stood firm for God’s truth in reestablishing the worship of God in Israel after the captivity in Babylon . It is likened also to the witness of Moses and Elijah, to whom God gave his special power. As in the time of Moses, God saves his people from being destroyed by hostile rulers. As in the time of Elijah, he saves them from being destroyed by the corruption of false religion."
