9 The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
After God protects Christ by calling Him up to Heaven, and nourishes the Church/Israel (symbolized by the woman with the crown of stars) as she wanders in the wilderness, he casts Satan out of the heavens. The compatriots who plotted alongside of the devil to challenge God, referred to above as 'his' angels, are also thrown down to earth, as the prior verses say there is no place for them in Heaven any longer.
Scholars point out that in this verse we have the only instance in the entire Bible to the tempter of the Garden of Eden as being confirmed as Satan himself. It's important to focus too on the name given to Satan in this verse, "the deceiver". Satan, the evil one, lures us away from God and into sin and unrighteousness by means of deception, by disguising the true nature of things, hence the saying, "all that glitters is not gold". A couple of examples that spring to mind for me are Hollywood and the music industry in the United States; both go to great lengths to promote a very gilded, glittery facade of wealth and opulence for those successful in those fields. However, behind the surface lurks the tendency for great destruction and emptiness. As Christians we need to be wary that Satan can't draw people to him by straightforward means, so he uses smoke and mirrors to attract people to their downfall.
A Prayer for Salvation from Christ:
Lord Jesus, I confess my sins and ask for your forgiveness. Please come into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Take complete control of my life and help me to walk in Your footsteps daily by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me and for answering my prayer.
