Revelation 14: 14-20

"14 Then I looked, and there was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like the Son of Man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand! 15 Another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to the one who sat on the cloud, “Use your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.” 16 So the one who sat on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.

17 Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel came out from the altar, the angel who has authority over fire, and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Use your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for its grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and gathered the vintage of the earth, and he threw it into the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the wine press, as high as a horse’s bridle, for a distance of about two hundred miles."

This is a very stark and dramatic passage. In just a few verses we are forewarned about a cataclysmic event during which those anointed by God will be separated out from those who have chosen to follow Satan. In the second part of this passage we are met with some very dramatic imagery in which those who rejected God and Christ are put into 'the great wine press of the wrath of God'. This is a very frightening happening to contemplate, and some of the scariest imagery we have been met with in the entire book of Revelation.

The writer at readingacts.com refers to this passage as the first and second harvest of the earth; the first harvest separates the righteous out from the rest of humanity and in the second half, the souls of the unrighteous are dramatically culled from the rest of the human population.

I wondered while I was reading this passage if this is why people use 1st Thessalonians 5:9 to argue for pre-tribulation rapture. If there are two harvests, wherein the Son of Man separates the 'wheat' or those who have obtained salvation, from the rest of humanity who are delivered to damnation, or trod into wine that flows like blood for 200 miles, one can see how this might be interpreted to mean Christ's followers are saved from the Great Tribulation. I really hope that every human being will accept Salvation from Christ and thus are spared from being thrown into this 'great wine press' of God's wrath when these events come to pass.
